The English Department is the cornerstone to success in all areas of the curriculum at LEH Foshan. Our English curriculum not only helps our students to develop essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening but also offers them a rich experience of English learning, fostered through a love of reading, engaging with multi-media content, online learning tools and extra-curricular activities (ECA). Oracy is promoted through every subject and the ECA such as the debate club and LEH Ambassadors.


在佛山霍利斯,英语学科是学生们在所有学科领域取得成功的基石。我们的英语课程不仅能帮助学生们提升阅读、写作、口语和听力方面的基本技能,还能为他们提供丰富多彩的英语学习体验,培养他们对阅读的兴趣,用多媒体内容、在线工具和课外活动等为英语学习增添趣味。在各个学科的学习和课外活动中,例如辩论俱乐部和校园大使,学生们都能加强自己的语言表达能力。



At LEH Foshan, we understand our students come from a variety of countries and regions where English may not be the first language. Hence the English Language Learning (ELL) programme was introduced to help our English learners to develop the language skills they needed to access our full British curriculum and to reach the English requirement for university entrance. 


作为一所国际学校,佛山霍利斯的学生来自不同国家和地区,他们的母语不一定是英语。因此,我们精心设计了英语语言学习(ELL)课程,帮助这些学生发展他们所需要的语言技能,从而使他们能够充分参与学校的英式课程,并达到他们所申请大学的入学语言要求。



In April 2022, LEH Foshan held an online event Coffee Morning with Headteacher – Keys to Success for English Language Learners featuring Mrs Jane Arden who, apart from her role as Headteacher at LEH Foshan, has been an English teacher for over 30 years. In this article, we share a recap of the event proving her experience as a language specialist and how our school’s approaches help students with the acquisition of English language. 


2022年4月,佛山霍利斯举办了“家校茶话会——如何帮助孩子在英语学习更上一层楼”的在线主题讲座,并由校长Jane Arden女士担任主讲。Jane Arden女士除了是我们的校长,她本身是一位已经有30多年丰富教学经验的英语老师。在讲座中,她分享了她的个人专业经验,以及佛山霍利斯帮助学生们掌握语言的方法。下面就让我们通过这篇文章来回顾讲座的精彩内容。

The Starting Point: Language Assessment

英语语言评估



Every student is unique. When we bring them to LEH Foshan, the first and most important step we do is to assess their English in four areas - listening, speaking, reading and writing. Three globally well-known assessment tools, CAT 4, NGRT and Oxford Placement Test are employed to find out the student’s comprehensive abilities in English as well as their potential to learn the English language. 


每个学生都是独一无二的,因此当他们来到佛山霍利斯的时候,我们所作的第一步也是最重要的一步,就是对他们英语的听说读写能力进行评估。我们会采用三套在全球范围备受认可的语言评估系统:CAT 4、NGRT和牛津英语入学评估,来了解学生们的英语综合能力和学习潜力。



There are two important pieces of information which are important to stress to everybody. One is that having good English does not make you more intelligent. And two, if you do not have good English, it does not mean that you do not have the ability to do acquire the amount of academic English to sit IGCSE and A Levels.  Students who began their career in an international school with very little English can and do go on to gain top grades in their examinations. 


在这里必须强调两点:一是学生的英语水平并不直接反映他们的智力水平;二是如果学生目前的英语水平一般,不等于他们没有学习潜力,不等于他们日后没有足够的学术英语能力去参加ICGSE和A Level考试。有些学生可能在刚进入国际学校学习的时候英语能力有所欠缺,但通过一段时间的学习,他们也能在考试中取得出色的成绩。

Choosing the right Language Support Programmes

Once your child comes to LEH, we have a three-step programme to support their English acquisition:

  • Step 1. Full immersion.

  • Step 2. Students are supported in and out of class.

  • Step 3. Light touch: targeted interventions when required


当您的孩子加入佛山霍利斯后,我们会采取英语学习三步曲帮助他们学习和掌握英语。

These three steps are applied differently in our Prep School and Senior School.

In Prep School, there will be a classroom teacher, who prepares and plans all the lessons, supported by their teaching assistant and a language teacher.

Our ELL specialist and classroom teacher work together to prepare a what we call full immersion English programme based on the student’s English level and deliver a simplified yet full version of the curriculum. The child may be put in a 1 to 1 support or small group support and gain intensive support from the language teacher. 


我们的英文专项老师和主班老师一起合作,根据学生的英语水平设计一个我们称之为沉浸式的英语课程,一个语言方面稍有简化但内容依然保持完整的课程。学生们将会被安排一对一的学习支持和小组协作,并由语言老师提供强化支持。


Once students reach a B1 (CEFR) level, we feel that they can access more of the curriculum, then we will begin to reintroduce them back into the classroom. While they will continue to receive support, they will also begin to become more independent with their English. 


当学生们的英语能力达到欧洲CEFR标准的B1水平,老师们认为他们能够接受更全面的课程内容,我们就会重新让这些学生们开始回归常规课程。这个阶段他们也会继续获得语言支持,不断提升自己的英文能力,在学习方面不断变得更加独立。

Finally, when their language levels reach mainstream children, they will be back in the classroom and return to mainstream lessons under the monitor. ELL support is available when they need it. 


最后,当他们的语言水平能够达到其他孩子的平均水平,这些学生将会完全回归到常规课程。在这个阶段,老师们会继续追踪他们的学习情况,并在有需要的情况下提供英语支持。

If a student’s language level is not high enough to access the full curriculum, he/she will not go into Humanities (History and Geography) and Spanish lessons. Instead, these lessons will be used for 1 to 1 English lessons and support will be provided according to a tailor-made language acquisition plan for them. This doesn’t mean they will miss out on History and Geography completely. During those lessons, they will receive a simplified humanities curriculum.


如果学生的语言水平不足以支撑他们学习所有学科课程,他们将不会参加常规的人文课程(即历史和地理)和西班牙语课程。我们会利用这些时间给他们提供一对一的英语支持。但这绝不意味着他们将错失历史和地理课程的学习,而是会学习一个简化版本的人文课程。


The student will start to return to Humanities lessons as his/her English level progresses, while his/her Spanish lessons will still be replaced with ELL support. The 1 to 1 support is available when they need it. 


随着学生在英语能力的进步,他们将会逐步回归常规的人文课程。但他们的西班牙语课堂时间依旧是用于英文学习。有需要的情况下他们也能获得一对一的英语教学支持。

The student will return to mainstream lessons with their English under the monitoring of mainstream teachers. ELL support will be provided when needed. 


随着学生在英语能力的进步,他们将会逐步回归常规的人文课程。但他们的西班牙语课堂时间依旧是用于英文学习。有需要的情况下他们也能获得一对一的英语教学支持。

LEH Personalised Language Support

Each child at LEH Foshan receives a Language Acquisition Plan (LAP), written by Mrs Jones our Head of Learning Support, based on the data from their baseline assessments. It is done timely so that we can monitor the progress and make sure that each child is making good progress each term. The plan is shared with all the class teachers of the student, so teachers know how to support the child in each area of their English development. 


在佛山霍利斯,每个学生都会获得一份个性化的语言学习计划(LAP)。这份计划是由我校学习支持主管Mrs Jones根据学生的英语语言评估数据而特别订制的。这样做的目的是让学校能够及时追踪孩子的学习进展,确保每个孩子在每个学期都能取得相应的进步。所有学科的老师都能够查看学生们的语言学习计划,因此他们会知晓学生们的情况,并想办法帮助他们在自己所负责的学科中发展相应的英语能力。



One of the most important things to look at for learning English is being able to speak and listen to English. And this is a particular concern of mine as I did some research many years ago which pointed out that some children on some days are speaking as little as four sentences of English per lesson. My research and research done all over the world prove that if a student speaks English, it improves their reading and their writing. So being able to speak English and hear English is the cornerstone to improving reading and writing skills.


学习英文最重要的一点是能够掌握英语听力和口语,这是我特别关注的一个主题。多年前我曾做过一些研究,发现了有些孩子有时每节课只说了四个英语句子,这显然是不够的。我的研究以及世界各地的研究都表明,如果一个学生能够很好地说英语,他们的阅读和写作能力也能相应提高。因此,英语的听力和口语是提高阅读和写作能力的基础。



Together with the Bell Foundation from Cambridge University, I devised a Passport to Oracy. Each child starts on a passport that is equivalent to their English speaking and listening levels and gradually moves up. In each passport, there are ten tasks for the students, task one being the easiest and ten the most difficult. These tasks are carefully crafted to build understanding and fluency in English and support the teachers by giving them a clear and straightforward way to assess progress. I am excited to introduce the Passport to Oracy to LEH Foshan to help our pupils achieve a higher level of English. 


我和剑桥大学贝尔英语语言学校合作,设计了一个名为“语言表达能力通关护照”的项目。一开始,每个孩子都会获得一本与他们口语和听力水平匹配的通关护照,在晋级的时候他们就会获得新的通关护照。每本通关护照中共有十项任务,第一项任务是最简单的,第十项是最难的。这些任务都经过精心设计,帮助学生建立和掌握对不同程度的英语的理解和流利表达,同时也给予老师们一个清晰和直观的方法来评估学生语言进展情况。我很高兴能够将“语言表达能力通关护照”带来佛山霍利斯,帮助我们的学生达到更高的英语水平。

LEH Language Enrichment Programmes

At LEH Foshan, we are very proud of our ECA (Extra-Curricular Activities) programme, an enrichment programme that enhances students’ academic curriculum. While a wide range of activities are offered to encourage students to discover and try out new activities, the enrichment programme also celebrates the acquisition of language. 


佛山霍利斯,我们提供广泛的课外活动课程(ECA),鼓励学生们参加一些他们从未尝试的活动,为他们的学术课程带来丰富的补充体验。这是我们引以为傲的一个方面。当中也包括了语言学习类的课外活动。



Moreover, we have introduced LAMDA to LEH Foshan and will make it a compulsory part of the Prep School curriculum and an ECA for senior students. LAMDA exams are created by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and is open to anyone looking to gain confidence and experience in speech, communication and/or performance. LAMDA also contributes to a student’s pathway to university as it provides UCAS points for their university applications and this programme is recognised by universities across the world.


此外,我们还在学校引入了LAMDA课程,成为预备学校的必修课程和中学阶段的课外活动。LAMDA课程和考试是由著名的伦敦音乐和戏剧艺术学院设计的,帮助感兴趣的学生们在演讲、交流和表演方面提升信心和获得实践经验。LAMDA对升学也很有帮助,能在学生们申请大学时候提供额外的UCAS积分,并且LAMDA课程在世界各地大学也广受认可。

Every Teacher is a Language Teacher

每位学科老师都是语言老师



Finally, I would like to remind you that at LEH Foshan every teacher is considered a language teacher. That means when we talk about a full immersion English programme in every lesson, our students will be developing their English abilities while studying every subject. 


在最后我也想提醒大家,在佛山霍利斯,每位学科老师都是语言老师。这意味着,学生们在学习每个学科的学术知识的同时,也在提高他们在相应学科的英语能力,这也是我们所说的沉浸式英语学习。



In summary, I would like to address again that the English language level is not linked to intelligence and that if a student’s English level is basic, it does not mean he/she does not have the potential to master the language. We have expertise in supporting all students to acquire the academic language needed by the syllabus. 


在最后,我想再次强调,学生们的英语水平和智力水平无关,如果他们目前的英语水平不够好,并不意味着他们没有掌握这门语言的能力。我们的教师团队都有足够的专业知识和经验,帮助学生们的英语水平达到课程教学大纲的要求。
