LEH Foshan Prep School will be open in the next academic year in August 2022 to extend our top-quality British education for younger students of Year 4 – 5 (age 8 - 9) and to prepare them for the full British Curriculum as they progress to key stage 3.

In this article, we invite Mrs Mandy Bateman, our Head of Prep School, to share more information about her experience, plans and vision for the Prep School, along with the curriculum and pastoral care system customised to the needs of our students.

Mrs Mandy Bateman

Head of Prep School 预备学校校长


Mrs Bateman is a well-experienced school educator and leader with 23 years of experience in the UK, Portugal, and Egypt. Her journey in education has been varied, starting as a class teacher, and working in many different educational settings. In 2009 she set up an independent school in the UK as the founding Headteacher and she has been in leadership roles, ever since. In her last position, Ms Bateman worked as a Headteacher of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Primary 6 form entry school at a well-regarded British International School in Cairo, Egypt. She holds a BA in Education from Staffordshire University, a PGCE from Edge Hill University and a MA SEN from Education Cambridge UK.

Q/ What are the most valuable lessons you have learned throughout your 23 years of career in education? How would you apply them to the development of Prep School at LEH Foshan?

This is such a great question; it is also one that I could write thousands of words on. If I need to keep it short, then I would narrow it down to three points:

Personalise learning

Allowing students to have a say in their learning process. In my experience students who are allowed to have a say in their own learning experience develop essential skills such as self-advocacy. When given the chance to take part in goal setting within the classroom, students are also more motivated to reach those goals. Each individual child in our school learns at a different pace. Each one has needs and interests that are specific to their unique learning style. Implementing a customized learning program gives all of them the ability to learn at their own pace, and in the way that is best for them.

The ultimate leader in the education system is the one who is in the room, the teacher. They are the ones who, though restricted by curriculums and government objectives, get to decide how the lesson is going to be delivered and how to engage the students in their class. By remaining at the ground level and listening to teachers has helped me develop curriculums and policies to the needs of all. Through connection, collaboration and idea sharing, as teachers we can bridge the gaps of student motivation and engagement and align the classroom more readily with children’s needs.


教育领域中最核心的领导者,其实是课堂上的学科老师。尽管他们的教学都会严格遵从课程大纲和政府法规,但他们仍有一定的自由度,可以决定如何讲课以及如何让学生们更积极地融入课堂。在制定课程和发展策略的时候,我会走出自己的办公室,去听取老师们的意见和想法,以确保能够满足学校的发展需求。作为教师,通过沟通、合作和分享想法,我们可以提升学生们对学习的动力和参与度,使课堂更加适合孩子们的发展需求。

Creativity and fun

By having a thematic approach to the way of teaching and learning is a powerful way for integrating fun into the curriculum. Extra-curricular activities such as field trips are highly important to the creativity and development of any student. This should never be underestimated or removed from the day-to-day routines.

There are many more I could speak about but in my experience the above three points have remained the most poignant. The three most powerful lessons I have learnt in education as mentioned above are the ones that I will most certainly bring to the Prep School at LEH Foshan. Student, staff, and parent/governing voices will always remain the most important part of any school development process. Without the voices of those that matter then the vision, ethos, and school culture will not grow or develop further. I plan to work in collaboration with our senior school to develop an all through school culture that all involved will be proud of. To be successful, schools must value the perspectives and opinions of students and act on them in a way that genuinely shapes learning and decision-making.

Q/ What does the curriculum look like at LEH Prep School?

The Thematic English National Curriculum (ENC) is a well-established and recognised curriculum used by most schools in England and by thousands of British curriculum schools all over the world. It is characterised by the terms ‘broad and balanced’ as, students study the full breadth of subjects that are needed to help them develop into well-rounded citizens of the future. The other huge value of the ENC is that it is highly adaptable to the international school setting.

Q/ What are the goals of pastoral care in our Prep School? And how do we accomplish these goals?

Pastorally we will nurture remarkable young men and women with focus on four keywords - Hope, Opportunity, Challenge, and Friendship.

Q/ What do we expect when our students graduate from Prep School?

At LEH Prep School, we will aim to develop every child’s skill, knowledge, and attitudes for them to become confident, independent, and inspired learners. Every Prep School class will have a qualified teacher with a teaching assistant, alongside access to ELL teachers and specialist subject teachers.

Lady Eleanor Holles (LEH) International School Foshan is now accepting applications from Year 4 to Year 13 (age 8-18) for the 2022-2023 Academic Year starting in August 2022. We encourage interested families to submit their children’s application as early as possible as placed are limited for certain year levels.
