Teamwork Makes the Dream Work 



“个人对群体付出的努力是令一支团队、一家公司、一个社会、一个文明社会得以运作的原因。” 这句话是美国足球教练文斯·隆巴迪(Vince Lombardi)的名言,他曾带领自己的球队赢得了无数次冠军,成为以决心争取胜利的典范。


"Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilisation work." This quote is attributed to Vince Lombardi, an American football coach who led his team to numerous championships and became an epitome of how determination can lead to victory.


当我反思学校如何能这么迅速有效地把面授课转为网课时,我立即想到了“个人对群体付出的努力”和站在前线的助教。在TWIS,我们非常感谢团队中有一群年轻的专业教育者,为确保我们的学生享有高质量的教学,他们孜孜不倦的与老师一起工作。助教们都通晓双语,接受过与小孩和年轻人相处的培训。他们是学校的外籍老师与新来学校还没适应全英语授课的学生之间的沟通桥梁;同时也跟家长们合作,促进家校沟通,增进家长对国际学校制度和运作的了解。


When I reflect on the success of how our transitioning from face-to-face learning into live online learning with such rapidity and effectivity, “individual commitment to a group effort” immediately comes to mind with our teaching assistants at the forefront. At TWIS, we are grateful to have in our team a group of young professionals who work tirelessly with their partner teachers to ensure the delivery of high-quality instruction to our students. High-performing bilinguals and trained to work with children and young adults, our teaching assistants build a bridge between our expatriate educators and our students who are new to having English as a medium of instruction. They work equally with our parents to facilitate easier communication to enhance understanding of the international school system and processes.


此外,为了向学生提供更好的教育,助教老师也需要提高对IB课程的认知和体会。他们正参与IB的研讨会, “小学项目PYP的实践:执行机构”的课程。通过这项培训,学校的助教将学到有效的策略,为学生提供更多的机会让他们表达自己的意见、做出明智的选择、和展示适合他们年龄阶段的领导力。


Moreover, our teaching assistants are aware that in order to be able to serve our students better, they need to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the IB. They are currently enrolled in the IB workshop, "Making the PYP Happen: Implementing Agency." With this training, our teaching assistants will gain effective strategies on how we can provide more opportunities for our students to develop their voice, make informed choices, and demonstrate leadership skills appropriate to their age.


学校真的很幸运有一批年轻又充满活力的助教。在这篇文章中,我们想花点时间向您介绍他们,以及他们为学校做出的无数贡献。

We are indeed fortunate to have a young, dynamic group of teaching assistants. In this post, we would like to take the time to introduce them to you and the myriad of wonderful things they do for our school.

Ms. Alice- 7,8年级助教 TA for G7 & G8

自我从4月份加入这个大家庭以来,这一个月是充实和充满挑战的。为了在课堂上更好地协助七、八年级的学生,我想多了解我的学生。所以我第一件事做的是和所有相关的学科老师、学校的心理咨询师和学生家长沟通交流。


It has been a fulfilling and challenging month since I joined this big family in April. In order to offer better support for G7 and G8 classes, I would like to get to know my students. The first thing I did was to communicate with all related subject teachers, the school counselor and parents.


我非常高兴和这些兢兢业业和支持学生的老师们一起工作。他们都知无不言为我提供详细的信息和提高学生课堂表现的建议。老师们也积极地让所有的同学都参与到课堂活动中并且提供机会给他们去思考和反馈。有些MYP同学的表现让我印象非常深刻,他们充满了好奇心同时又可以在不同的科目或者项目中反馈他们学到的知识和表达他们的疑惑。


I am happy to work with these diligent and supportive teachers who filled me in all the details about students and gave me advice about how to improve students’ performance in class. They also try to engage all students and give them the opportunity to think and reflect. Some MYP students impressed me with their curiosity, the ability to reflect on their knowledge gained from different subjects or projects, and the courage to voice their doubts.


在线上课堂期间我们遇到不同的挑战,我试着与学生和老师沟通以协调课堂的教学。例如,如何处理同学们没有按时交作业的情况呢?我发现很多学生都没有记下作业的习惯,所以每次老师布置作业的时候,我都以文字的方式写在小组讨论区,并且有时候在课后单独发信息提醒学生。如果同学们一直拖延没有按时交功课,我会联系家长让他们了解情况。家长的参与对协助改善学生的行为起着重要的作用。


There were different challenges encountered during the virtual class and I tried to communicate between students and teachers to facilitate learning in the classroom. For example, how to deal with the frustrating situation of late work? I noticed that most students don’t have the habit to note down the homework at the end of the lesson, so I always put a note to the group chat and sometimes remind them after class by sending a text message on Teams or WeChat. When students keep procrastinating on homework, I will notify parents about the situation. Parent involvement plays an important role when it comes to improving students’ behavior. 



Ms. Belinda-   5年级助教  TA for G5

时间飞逝!转眼间我加入东华文泽学校已半年了,也是何其的幸运能与这么多国内外的老师一起共事。自新冠肺炎爆发后,学校为了不耽误孩子的学业,已迅速决定采取线上上课的方式继续教学。


Time flies! I’ve been in TWIS for half year already, and how lucky I am to work with so many wonderful domestic and international teachers. After the outbreak of COVID-19, the school has taken decisive action to conduct interactive virtual classes with the aim of not suspending students from studying.

 

当然在正式开始上网课前,有几件事情需要确定:一、线上上课需要哪个视频软件?二、上课课件怎么下发给学生?三、学生或家长若有问题,该怎么联系老师?所以开课前一个星期,学校给所有老师召开线上会议,把方案定下来。为确保线上课程正常进行,校方除了以邮件告知家长,还安排了我们TA用微信或打电话传达这些信息并落实好。


Before the launch of TWIS virtual school, there were several issues to be resolved. First, which software should we use for online classes? Second, how should we distribute assignments to students? Third, if students or parents have inquiries, how should they contact teachers? A week before the virtual school, we held an online meeting to work out the plan. To ensure the virtual class runs smoothly, the school not only notified parents via email, but also designated all Tas to convey the messages with Wechat or phone calls to parents.


遇到问题重在解决,所以作为家校沟通的桥梁,我们尽力的跟各方联系。必要时也会跟班主任或学课老师迅速开展个人家长会,紧急处 理严重的问题。


In the face of problems, it is of great importance to solve them. As the bridge for communication between the school and families, we try our best to liaise with all parties. If necessary, myself and homeroom or subject teacher will also organize an urgent meeting with parents for serious matters.





Ms. Bonnie- 6年级助教  TA for G6

作为六年级的助教,我的日常工作包括上课前要保证所有的孩子都能够准时出现在课堂上。遇到任何技术问题,要帮他们联系ICT部门。与此同时要给外籍老师翻译,使孩子们能够更加理解老师所说的内容。课后再提醒孩子们当天的作业,并在适要时候联系家长,督促孩子完成作业。向家长传达任课老师对于孩子的反馈。


As a teaching assistant of the Grade 6 class, one of my daily duties is to make sure all students are showing up for the class on time. If students encounter any technical problems in class, I will help them to contact with the ICT department. At the same time, I am responsible to interpret for our international teachers and students, so that students can better understand what teachers said. After the class, I have to remind students to do their homework, and contact parents when necessary to urge students to complete the homework. Last but not least, to pass on the feedback of teachers to parents.


这段时间,即使是线上学习,也可以感受到学生的学习热情不减。班上有总是又好又快地完成作业的学生,为其他同学树立了良好的榜样。也有一些总是在课后会主动提出问题,我感觉很开心,因为他们能够承担自己的责任,自主学习。虽然班里有学生在刚开始不会总是按时出现在课堂,但现在他们的表现已经大有好转,不仅准时参与课堂,而且开始认真完成作业。重要的是孩子学习态度的转变,他们愿意去和老师配合,积极完成作业。虽然还任重道远,但只要他们自己愿意付出时间和精力去完成,我相信他们会做的很好。有几位家长总是会和我积极沟通孩子近期的学习问题,能够得到他们的支持和理解对于推动学生的进步是大有裨益的,我很感谢家长给出的建议。针对家长的疑问,我们也组织了几次单独的家长和任课老师的家长会,帮助他们了解课堂和孩子的近况。


During this period of time, even though we are studying online, we can still feel students' enthusiasm for learning. There are students who always complete the homework quickly and do very well, setting a good example for other students. There are also students who always ask questions after class, I feel very delighted to give them instructions because they take the responsibility to learn independently. Although some students didn’t appear in the classroom on time in the beginning, their performance has improved a lot. Not only did they begin to attend class on time, but they also started to take their homework seriously. The most important thing is the change of children’s attitudes towards learning. They are willing to ask the teacher for help and actively complete the assignment. Although there is still a long way to go, as long as they are willing to spend their time and effort to complete it, I believe they will do better soon. Some parents are proactive to communicate with me about their child’s learning. Receiving their support and understanding can greatly help students succeed and I am very grateful for their suggestions too. In response to parents’ concerns, we have also organized several parent meetings for individual parents and teachers to help them understand what we are teaching and the learning progress of their child.


另外,我们有非常负责任的老师,比如Anantha数学老师。他不仅运用多种方法使课堂有趣,包括游戏、推测、观察日常生活得出数学原理、创作自己的数学歌等,而且愿意花自己的休息时间给需要帮助的同学去补习。这让家长和学生自己也重燃对于学习的信心。


In addition, we have many responsible teachers at the school, such as Mr. Anantha. He always uses a variety of activities to make the class interesting which includes games, guessing, observation of daily life to derive mathematical principles, creating their own math songs, etc. He is also willing to spend his private time after class to those who need extra help, which has rekindled the confidence of parents and students in learning.

 


Ms. Ivy-  4年级助教  TA for G4

我很高兴能加入这个团队因为我喜欢孩子,乐于与孩子打交道,也乐于与孩子做朋友。因为孩子脸上写满了真诚,他们的心灵像泉水一样清纯,天天与他们一起,我也会童心不老。


I feel so grateful to join the team as I love children and happy to be friends with them. With faces full of sincerity and souls as pure as spring water, staying with them every day makes me feel young at heart.


刚开始网络课程的时候,孩子们不打开摄像头和麦克风真的很恼人,不过当我提出这个要求的时候,我也反省自己有没有做到。身为教师,言行举止学生都看在眼里,刻在心上。他们正处于善于模仿的成长阶段,在学生面前,老师就是一面镜子。反思和检讨过后,同学们的上课表现都非常好。


At the beginning of online classes, it was upsetting that students were not willing to open the camera and microphone. However, when I requested them to do so, I reflected on whether I did the same. Teachers are regarded as role models for students, and they are always watching us. My students are at the stage of learning by imitation, so it is like a mirror that they eventually begin to act like us. After reflection and review, students have behaved much better in class now.


网络课程让我看到了孩子们可爱的一面。当有些同学对电脑不熟悉时,其他同学会集思广益的给他出主意。孩子们在课堂上相互帮助,相互提醒,真的让我很感动。同学们的小举动,让我时时感受到教育工作者的幸福和快乐。


The virtual classes let me see the lovely side of children. When some students are not familiar with the video conferences, other students are eager to give their advice collectively.  Seeing them caring and helping each other really touches me. Just a small action from a student can remind me of the happiness and joy of being an educator. 



Ms. Lacey-  2年级助教  TA for G2

我很开心能和二年级的学生和老师们一起度过这段网上课程。在上网课的初级阶段,同学们不熟悉Microsoft Teams和Managebac平台的使用,我主要通过给家长发送平台使用说明书和视频、微信指导还有qq远程操控来帮助他们熟悉上课平台的使用。


I am happy to have spent this online course with grade 2 students and teachers. At the beginning of TWIS virtual school, students were not familiar with Microsoft Teams and Managebac platforms. I mainly assisted parents to use those platforms by sending instruction manuals and videos, giving guidance on WeChat and remote desktop control via QQ.


作为班里的助教,我跟学生一起参与每一堂课。在上课开始前,我会检查学生的出勤,并及时联系迟到的学生进入课堂。在课堂上,会跟学生一起参与讨论,必要的时候翻译一下老师讲解的内容或者要求,以便学生更好的理解。在课后,我会告诉学生作业、解答学生问的问题、督促学生完成作业并向家长们传达老师们的要求。


As a teaching assistant, I participated in every lesson with students in the assigned class. Before the lesson starts, I check the attendance of students and contact late arrivals to make sure they enter the virtual class on time. During the lesson, I engage students in group discussions and translate the information or requirements of teachers when necessary to help students understand better. After the class, I remind students of the homework, answer their questions, urge them to complete the homework and pass on teachers’ messages to parents.


网课期间遇到的其他问题,比如网络技术问题,会联系ICT部门,也很感谢IT部门的配合,及时解决问题。我跟班主任Lesli老师也会根据学生上课的情况联系家长,并召开家长跟老师们的个人家长会,共同商量怎样让学生更好的适应和学习。很期待我们回归校园的那一天。


For other problems encountered during online classes, such as network issues, I made contact with the ICT department, and I am very grateful for their cooperation to solve the problem in a timely manner. Homeroom teacher Ms. Lesli and I will also contact parents according to the situation of the student in class, and hold a personal parent meeting to discuss how to help students better adapt the class and learn better. I really look forward to the day we return to the campus.
