Looking back on the school year so far, what have we done in the Primary Years Programme (PYP)? 

In this article, Nathaniel talks about his experiences as a Grade 5 student at Tungwah Wenzel International School (TWIS). Let him take us on his PYP learning journey! 

学校的小学PYP有8个科目，包括中文、英语、数学、科学、人文、体育、音乐和视觉艺术。但由于PYP的跨学科性质，这些科目并不像传统教学模式这样单独授课的，所以我们上课似乎没有8个科目这么多。不同科目的老师会一起合作，把各科目整合在“探究单元”的教学主题中。

当我们能够学以致用，把不同学科知识运用在考核学生的总结性评估上，这样的学习就更有意义了。

We have 8 subjects in the PYP. These are Chinese, English, math, sciences, social studies, PE, music and visual arts. However, it does not seem like we have 8 subjects because of the transdisciplinary nature of the PYP. These traditional subjects are not taught in isolation. All my teachers work together to integrate the subjects into what we call Units of Inquiry.

Our work becomes more meaningful if we are able to use what we know in different subjects to perform well in our summative assessments.

在五年级的班，我们刚完成一个关于“现代经济是日益体现包容性和可持续增长的全球网络”的探究单元。在探索这个主题的阶段，我们在人文课中了解到社会互动之间的因果关系与影响，包括贸易、外汇制度、政治，还有外交。

In Grade 5, we just finished the unit of inquiry on how “Modern economies are global networks that are increasingly interconnected for inclusive and sustainable growth.” While doing this, we learned in social studies the causes and effects of interaction among societies, including trade, systems of international exchange, politics, and diplomacy.

在科学课堂上，我们学了生态系统以及个人和社区如何利用科学来保护地球资源和环境。在数学课上，我们把计量单位从英制转换为公制，也学会了不同货币的转换方法，解决涉及计量和货币的数学问题。

In science, we learned about ecosystems and how individuals and communities use science to protect Earth’s resources and environment. In maths, we converted measurement units from imperial to metric; and converting different currencies and solving math problems involving measurement and currencies.

在这个学习单元中，我们阅读了杰克·伦敦的经典著作《野性的呼唤》，了解到1890年代克朗代克淘金热潮中的世界。透过这本书，我们认识到所有人都必须面对现实世界中存在的善与恶。

In this unit, we read Jack London’s classic book titled “The Call of the Wild” where we learned how the world was in the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. Through this book, we realized that all of us must deal with the reality of both good and evil as they exist in the world.

PYP小学课程有很多我喜欢的地方。很多时候我们的单元学习都有“亲身体验“的机会。我们会跟社区的专家交流，和实地考察以帮助我们了解探究单元的中心思想，让我们深谙在课堂上的学习与现实世界是息息相关的。

我也很喜欢学习中文和庆祝中国传统节日活动。我正学习如何用中文交流和写汉字。今年学校的中秋节和春节庆祝活动我都积极参与了

I also like learning Chinese and celebrating major Chinese events. I am learning how to communicate in Chinese and write ideograms. I actively participated in this year’s lantern festival and Chinese new year celebration.

作为一所在中国的国际学校，我们不仅要了解中国的文化，也要庆祝像国际圆点日这样有关表达自我和释放创造力的重要活动。我们也举办了冬季家庭集市，全校师生倾力参与演出。

As an international school, we are not just learning about our host country but we are also celebrating major events like the International Dot Day that is about self-expression and creativity. We held our Winter Family Fair with lots of performances from the entire school.

学校也有很多课外活动来培养学生的新兴趣和技能，发掘热衷的新事物。今年，我加入了烹饪、音乐剧和乒乓球俱乐部等。

I also love that we have a lot of after-school activities to develop new interests and skills, and discover new passions. This year, I joined clubs like cooking, the musical play and table tennis.

我想我最喜欢学校的地方是这里的老师。我们的老师都很幽默有趣，并尽力把教学变得有趣味和生动。上个月的5月4日，为了庆祝科幻世界和推动大家的想象力，我的老师在上课时都打扮成星球大战的角色。当然，这么好玩的事情不能只有老师参与，我们TWIS的学生也非常投入当天的活动。

我真的很感谢所有老师一直支持和关心我们。我有很多新的尝试也学到了很多。

I think what I like the best at TWIS is the teachers. Our teachers are funny and they try to make learning fun and engaging. Last month on the 4th of May to celebrate the world of science fiction and imagination, my teachers dressed up as Star Wars characters. Of course, we can’t let just the teachers have fun, the TWIS students did the same thing. 

I really appreciate all of our teachers for being there all the time and caring about us. I have tried and learned a great many new and wonderful things.

最重要的是，为这一学年增添色彩的同班同学和TWIS的各位同学，他们让我的校园生活变得更多姿多彩和充实。在学校的各种活动中，我们一起度过了美好的经历和回忆。我带着兴奋的心情，期待着秋季学期加入MYP中学部，因为这代表新机会和挑战的来临！

Above all, what added color to this school year were my classmates and fellow students at TWIS who made my school life livelier and fuller. We had great experiences and memories together from various school activities. I am so excited to go into MYP in the fall semester as it means new opportunities and challenges ahead for me!
