TWIS首幅壁画登场!背后的故事你可知道?

当走进东华文泽学校(TWIS),有没有注意到在接待大厅白色柔和的墙壁上,挂了一幅色彩绚丽的艺术品呢?这副壁画《知识的海洋》是由我们艺术课Esteban老师在为其一个月的中学部艺术项目里带领学生共同创作的心血结晶。这位老师经验丰富,当壁画家已经有15年了。

When you entered TWIS, have you noticed a fabulous piece of art against the muted background of white walls in the lobby? The mural The Ocean of Knowledge is a culmination of a month-long MYP art project led by our art teacher, Mr. Esteban Camacho Steffensen, who has been a muralist for 15 years.

从集思广益到设计、绘画到涂色,TWIS的中学生都参与其中,制作这件高1米宽15米的艺术品。作品灵感源于学校校训:希望、探索,存于我息 ,描绘人类在海洋中探索的故事。

From brainstorming to designing, drawing and painting, MYP students were engaged to work on this piece, which measures 1 meter by 15 meters. The work was based on the school motto: While I Breathe, I Explore, I Hope, depicting a story of human exploration in an ocean.


这是学校的第一幅壁画,也不会是最后一幅。

This is the first school mural and likely not the last.


这壁画不仅提升了学校里的艺术氛围,还为学生们提供了一个美化校园的机会,并为每一位到访者展示自己的艺术作品。

The mural not only uplifts the space, but also gives students an empowering opportunity to decorate the campus and see their own artwork on display for every school visitor.




以下,Esteban老师会分享他当壁画家的背景,和解释这幅作品的意义和过程。

Below, Mr. Esteban shares his background of being a muralist and walks us through the idea and process of creating the first mural at TWIS.

告诉我们你的故事,你是怎么成为一名壁画家的?

Tell us your story, how did you become a muralist? 

我是来自美国俄勒冈州和哥斯达黎加的壁画家,有15年在美国西北部创作壁画的经验,以大自然的风景画来启发大众。我的作品主要围绕着濒危动物、生态系统中生物与环境的关系、和文化的反思来鼓励大家以行动保护我们热爱的地球。


当我17岁的时候,我的高中老师让我在学校的游泳池旁边画一幅壁画,就这样我开始了画壁画的生涯。这个壁画项目可以说是改变了我的一生。


一般来说,我会画色彩丰富生动的风景画来吸引众人的视线,走近作品一边发掘细节时,一边感受与作品产生的共鸣- 这是我绘画的一贯风格。在制作壁画的过程,我也注重给予社区参与创作的机会,让青年、长者和新兴艺术家参与和指导他们。我从2005年开始画壁画,2010年开始教授公共艺术。

I am an Oregon and Costa Rican muralist with 15 years of experience creating murals in the Northwest to inspire the public with images of the natural world.  My compositions emphasize critical species, ecosystem relationships and cultural reflection to encourage action to protect the world we love.


I started painting mural when my high school teacher asked me to paint a mural next to our swimming pool when I was 17. This project changed the course of my life.


Typically, I paint dynamic landscapes which attract the public to get closer and discover the small details, while they experience a sense of connection to the action depicted- a signature style of my painting. My process also focuses on creating empowering imagery through community engagement. It includes the participation and mentorship of youth, seniors and emerging artists. I have been painting murals since 2005 and teaching public art since 2010.

在学校的第一幅壁画需要有一个鼓舞人心的形象,能体现出学校的精神风貌和成为欢迎所有访客的旗帜。这艺术品称为《知识的海洋》。在研究各种构成我们校徽的元素后,六、七、八年级的学生以探索为主题把学校的价值观延伸至壁画的设计里。

The first mural for our school needed to be an inspiring image that would serve as the school spirit and welcoming banner for all visitors. We call the artwork The Ocean of Knowledge. After studying various elements that form our school logo, Grade 6, 7 and 8 students helped in the design to expand the meaning of the school’s values with a focus on exploration.

壁画的草稿 The sketch of the mural


这作品的创作灵感是人类在知识的海洋里进行探索明朝郑和下西洋,杨帆万里,吸收世界各地的知识。各种象征着探索、智慧和毅力的海洋动物在壁画中有的伴着帆船,有的在海底里畅游。浩瀚的海洋被描绘成神奇的元素,顺着水流以不同的形状和形式出现,转化成书本、卷轴、和纸张之类的。


这幅壁画的故事情节从左侧开始。书籍朝下在黑暗之中,象征着知识从一个未知的黑暗中萌生。海豚- 代表着智慧,与知识在玩耍,孕育出“知识的海洋”的概念。向右移动,接下来壁画描绘了一头鲸鱼。作品的第一道光线就是折射在这头鲸鱼背上的一束光芒。继续向右看,书籍纷纷向上翻,这里传达一个理念:知识、启迪和变革正在在地平线上蔓延开来。从飞鱼进化成海龟、再变成雀鸟的过程中,一幕生命进化的画面呈现在我们面前。

The piece is grounded in the idea of human exploration taking place in an ocean of knowledge. The great fleet of Zheng He, of the Ming Dynasty, is depicted traveling across the ocean in different directions to gather knowledge of the entire world. Symbolic animals representing exploration, intelligence and perseverance are depicted swimming alongside or under the great ship. The ocean is depicted as a magical element, which varies in shape and form, as it flows across geometric planes and transforms into representations of books, scrolls, and other paper documents.


The composition’s storyline begins on the left side, where books are facing down into the darkness. This image symbolizes knowledge arising out of a dark unknown. The dolphin, which represents intelligence, is playing with knowledge, symbolically giving birth to the first ideas. Moving towards the right, the design next depicts a whale. The first signs of light appear here in a shaft of light reflecting on its back. As we continue to move to the right, the books turn upward to convey the idea that knowledge, illumination and transformation are spreading far across the horizon. Images of evolving life are seen in the transformation of flying fish turning into turtles and then into birds.

The Making of The Ocean of Knowledge 

这是学生们第一次以团队合作创作绘画。这也是他们最大的艺术项目,长1米、宽15米的壁画。经过一个月的设计工作,我们把最终的设计投射到白板上。学生帮忙绘画,然后用颜料和水混合在一起,营造出透明的层次感和深度,同时他们练习涂色技巧并在细节上仔细处理。最后的润色工作是由老师完成,及学校的后勤人员在入口的墙上把壁画安装好给整个TWIS校园社区欣赏。

The students had their first experience painting as a team. This was also their largest art project, measuring 1 meter by 15 meters. After one month of design, we projected the final design onto the white panels. Students helped to draw and then paint the panels with acrylic paint mixed with water creating transparent layers, depth, practicing their skills and working on many details. The final touches were done by the teacher and the logistic team installed the panels up on the wall for the benefit of the TWIS community.
