“孩子从公立学校转学,广州斐特思很多课堂全英授课,他能跟上进度吗?”


这是家长们咨询频次最高的问题。

我们不能直接回答能或者不能,但和您分享两个同学的故事。

"Can a child adapt to the transition from public schools, considering that many classes at Fettes College Guangzhou are conducted solely in English?" 


This is a question frequently asked by parents. 


While we cannot provide a simple yes or no answer, we would like to share the experiences of two students to offer insights.

Simply a Guessing Game

一开始,听课只能靠猜


八年级的Garron,参加了英语教学起点分层测评,被分到起点层。回忆起第一堂英语课,他感叹道,“当时什么都听不懂,只能看着老师的教学内容和课本,猜测大意。”以前,Garron的英文课是老师用中文教学,现在是全英授课。Garron的梦校在美国,该校的入学标准有明确的英语成绩要求,所以他决心迎难而上,克服语言关。

Garron, Grade 8, took the English ‘Starters’ Level assessment and was assigned to Phase one. Reflecting on his first English class, Garron expressed his frustration, saying, "I couldn't grasp anything. I could only rely on observing the teacher's visuals and the textbook to infer the main idea." Previously, Garron's English classes were conducted in Chinese, but now they are entirely in English. His dream school in the United States had specific English language requirements for admission, so he was determined to overcome the language barrier and leap forward.

Kelly, Grade 10, possessed a strong English foundation and scored 130 out of 150 on the written assessment. She believed she could reach ESL Extent (advanced level) based on her performance, but her listening comprehension hindered her progress, placing her in the ESL Core (basic level) class. At the start of her English class, Kelly required assistance understanding the teacher's instructions and struggled to express her ideas clearly in English. As an "honours student," she felt overwhelmed by the inability to comprehend her teacher's lessons.

Three Months to English Fluency

Kelly遇到的挑战比Garron小一些。“学校的英语课分学科课和雅思课,我只要跟着学校的课程安排学习,慢慢就能跟上进度了。”三个月时间,Kelly不仅能够听懂全英课,还能有逻辑地用英文表达自己的想法。

Recognising Garron's learning concerns, his English teacher devised a plan to enhance his language skills. One such initiative was the "Partners Help Each Other" program. Garron teamed up with his Russian classmate to exchange stories about Russia and China using body language and imperfect speech, striving to improve together. Encouraged by his teachers to "speak with confidence," Garron frequently seeks assistance from foreign language instructors. Initially limited to word-for-word translations, he has now progressed to communicating in coherent and lengthy sentences.

Kelly faced lesser challenges compared to Garron. She stated, "My English classes were divided into subject-specific classes and IELTS preparation classes. By following the school's schedule, I gradually caught up." Within three months, Kelly acquired a comprehensive understanding of the English curriculum and became proficient in expressing herself logically in English.

学科、标化课两手抓


学校多数学生的母语非英语,英语科组根据此情况和升学要求,创设两套课程体系并行的教学模式:国际标准课程体系和国际公认的英语水平测试体系。


国际标准课程体系如MYP,EAL英语语言习得课程,由外方教师将听、说、读、写等必备技能融入单元教学中,带领学生探究式学习英文课题。在日常情境和学术环境中,学生通过阅读、写作、演讲等项目学习方式,提高跨文化交流能力,培养批判性思维。

Considering that most students have a non-English mother tongue and have future study aspirations in English environments, the English department has developed two parallel teaching models: the international standard curriculum system(MYP) and internationally recognised English proficiency tests(KET,PET and IELTS).


In the international standard curriculum system, such as MYP (Middle Years Programme) and EAL (English as an Additional Language) English Language Acquisition courses, expat teachers guide students in acquiring essential skills like listening, speaking, reading, and writing through inquiry-based learning. For instance, students engage in project-based learning methods and academic settings to enhance intercultural communication skills and foster critical thinking.


For internationally recognised English proficiency tests like KET, PET, FCE, and IELTS,  teachers integrate the content of the international standard curriculum with the requirements of English proficiency tests. They collaborate to tailor teaching and learning materials specifically for students, helping them transform their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills into measurable English proficiency. Students undergo international English tests to achieve internationally recognised proficiency certifications alongside regular classes.


These two curriculum systems complement each other, effectively integrating Chinese and Western educational approaches. "After a professional assessment by the school, my teacher believes that I can aim for an IELTS score of 6.5," Kelly commented, highlighting the progress and target set for her English proficiency.

Stratified Small Class Teaching: Like the experiences of Garron and Kelly, many students have varying levels of English proficiency. The school divides students into different levels and implements teaching practices to cater to their needs. Based on the IELTS test standards, teachers design tailored assessments that align with each student's proficiency level. This allows students to make gradual progress at an appropriate difficulty level.

Supplementary Program: Students participate in additional English tutoring sessions every Tuesday evening. During these targeted sessions, students receive supplementary materials and more detailed feedback on their homework. This focused attention promotes self-reflection, helps students identify areas for improvement, and ultimately enhances their English language skills.



英语词汇积累

每天,老师会组织同学进行十分钟英文单词测试,以此巩固和提升他们的词汇量。此外,在英语课室布置中,老师也会将学生需要熟记的词汇渗透在目之所及之处,让同学们潜移默化积累单词。

Focus on vocabulary learning: The teacher will organise daily 10-minute English vocabulary quizzes to reinforce and enhance students' vocabulary skills. In addition, in the English classroom arrangement, teachers will incorporate essential vocabulary for students to memorize through sight, allowing them to acquire words effortlessly.


全员全程追踪记录

为更好追踪学生学习情况,老师用ManageBac(学生管理系统)记录他们的作业。例如,学生入学时的英文习作被纳为基础样本,后续的作文都会被老师持续记录,对比检查学生写作能力的提升情况。

Student progress monitoring: To ensure effective monitoring of student learning, teachers utilise ManageBac to record homework assignments. For instance, the teacher takes students' English exercises from enrolment as a benchmark sample and continuously records subsequent compositions to track and assess students' progress in writing ability. This is also done for KET, PET and FCE scores.

老师理解学生“羞于开口”的心理,设置了各种互动活动,让学生自由表达想法,培养他们有效沟通所需的自信心。经过练习,喜爱画画的Garron,克服了“不敢开口,怕被嘲笑”的恐惧心理,在英语课之外,他也敢于自信地与外方美术教师探讨学习。

Speaking practice anytime, anywhere: Teachers understand students' hesitation and organise various interactive activities to encourage students to freely express their ideas and build the confidence needed for effective communication. Through practice, Garron, who is passionate about painting, has overcome the fear of being judged and confidently engages in discussions with foreign art teachers outside of English class.


演练相长,提升技能

Practising and honing skills: The English class employs innovative teaching methods such as role-playing, allowing students to articulate their thoughts clearly, explore different perspectives, and actively participate in the learning process. For instance, during the Language and Culture Festival, students presented the story of Alexander Hamilton in English through captivating rap and dance performances, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.



以赛代练,学以致用

老师教授学生如何有效组织回答、使用连贯性语言连接思路,以及运用恰当的词汇和习惯用语。这些雅思口语考试的策略和技巧被同学们内化于心,充分运用于校外比赛中。正如在多场ASDAN模拟商业挑战赛上,同学们用英文汇报和路演,最终获得佳绩。

Applying learned knowledge: Teachers guide students in organising their responses effectively, using coherent language to connect ideas, and employing appropriate vocabulary and idioms. These IELTS speaking test strategies and skills become ingrained in students and are fully utilised during external competitions. In events like the ASDAN Simulated Business Challenge Regional Competition, students successfully used English to deliver presentations and conduct roadshows, achieving commendable outcomes.


回到最初的问题,孩子们刚入学时的英文水平,仅仅是一个开始。

Returning to the initial question, “Can a child adapt to the transition from public schools, considering that many classes at Fettes College Guangzhou are conducted solely in English?” The answer is a resounding, yes!  A student's initial English proficiency is just the beginning of their language journey upon entering Fettes College Guangzhou. Here at FCG they can discover the learning community; find progress within their English language skill; and flourish as proficient users of English in an environment where they can practise and develop their abilities every day.
