今天我们的主题是《讲文明礼貌，树道德风范》。 

Our topic for today’s topic is “civilization and politeness” 

古人云：“不学礼，无以立”。讲文明懂礼貌是我们做人的基本准则。 

It’s been said, “Manners make the man”. Being polite is a basic rule of life. 

儿时在家，父母用自己的言行启蒙我们文明有礼；进入斐特思公学，老师言传身教我们文明礼貌；到社会上，时时，处处都要求人们讲文明懂礼貌。When we’re at home, our parents taught us to be civilized and courteous with their words and deeds; when we entered Fettes, our teachers educate us to be civilized and polite. When we enter society, we are required to be polite from time to time.

文明礼貌不仅给自己带来快乐，给他人带来愉悦，而且能创造出更加和谐的社会。反之，不讲礼貌，没有道德，也很有可能带来灾祸。 

Civilization and politeness not only bring happiness to oneself and others but also create a harmonious society. On the other hand, bad manners and morality are also likely to bring about disaster. 

2018 年 10 月的一天，重庆市万州区一大巴车在万州长江二桥桥面与小轿车发生碰撞后，坠入江中。通过潜水人员将车载行车记录仪打捞出水后，公安机关多次模拟试验，提取到事发前车辆内部监控视频。视频里女乘客要求司机靠边停车，司机坚决不停并用车子会坠江来吓唬女乘客，于是两人从唇枪舌战上升到了大打出手，最终整辆车，带着十五条人命，坠入长江。 

One day in 2018, a bus crashed into the Yangtze River after colliding with a car on the deck of the Second Yangtze River Bridge in Wanzhou, Chongqing. After divers salvaged the vehicle, traveling recorder, and SD card, the public security officers successfully restored the SD card data and extracted the internal monitoring video of the vehicle before the accident. In the video, the female passenger asked the driver to pull over. The driver insisted that the driver would not stop and frighten the female passenger with the car falling into the river. So they went from a bitter quarrel to fighting. Finally, the whole car, with fifteen lives, fell into the Yangtze River. 

悲剧令我们所有人痛心，也给我们敲响了警钟。如果时光能够倒流，如果女乘客礼貌地和司机说明情况，耐心等待下一站下车。如果司机礼貌地点头应允，我想这样一个简单的礼貌方式是不是极有可能避免这场悲剧！ 

Tragedy is distressing and it also sounds an alarm to us. If time could be reversed. If the female passenger could only politely explain the situation to the driver, while patiently waiting for the next stop to get off. If the driver could give a warm response. Such simple polite actions would likely help avoid this tragedy! 

一个人的思想，行为，对别人，对社会，是有益还是有害，要有一个衡量的准则，我们通常把它称作道德，礼貌与道德是互为表里的。礼貌是道德的外衣，道德是礼貌的内涵。我们要认清哪些是应该做的，哪些是不该做的。以此来规范我们的行为，展现我们的道德修养。 

A criterion is required to measure whether one’s thoughts and actions are beneficial or harmful to others and the whole society. We usually call this criterion morality. Politeness and morality come hand in hand. Politeness is the cloak around morality, and morality is the connotation behind politeness. We should recognize what should be done and what should not be done in order to regulate our behavior. Always be polite and show our moral conduct. 

在斐特思公学，每一个人都应该讲礼貌，做错事情说“对不起”，这展现的是勇于承担的道德风范；见到同学，老师，客人主动打招呼，这展现的是我们尊重他人的道德风范；别人表达感谢，我们微笑着摆摆手说“别客气“，这展现的是我们谦和慷慨的道德风范。我们更有责任和义务把讲礼貌的好习惯展现给国人，展示给世界，共创文明中国，文明世界！ 

Everyone in Fettes should be polite, We must say ” sorry” when we do something wrong, which demonstrates our courageous moral demeanor; when we meet classmates, teachers, and guests, we greet them with “ Hello ” and “ Hi ”, which demonstrates our moral character and respect for others; when others express their thanks, we smile and wave our hands while saying “ you ’ re welcome, ” which shows our modest and generous moral character. At the same time, We have a great responsibility and obligation to show our good courteous habits to the people of China and to the world to create a civilized China and a civilized world!
