在Learning Village于5月举行的年度竞赛中,哈罗海口获得总分第一!

其中榜上不乏许多英国私立中小学。我们非常为哈罗小学的学习热情和高水平英语教学感到骄傲,你们的努力又再次为哈罗创造了荣誉。

Learning Village 

是什么?



很多家长觉得,自己孩子的英语水平其实很不错,口语表达流利,日常交流没问题。为什么进入国际学校后会跟不上课堂呢?


相比普通功能性社交英语,在国际学校课堂中需要的学术英语却是大不相同的。


而Learning Village就是这样一个学习平台,给6-14岁的非英语母语者的学生提供EAL课程支持(English as an additional language),使学生能够尽快融入全英文课堂,并在课程中脱颖而出。


哈罗海口在小学阶段(G1~G4)引入了Learning Village, 目的在于让中国学生能够为全英文学习做好准备。

哈罗学生如何利用Learning Village(学习村)提升课堂学术英语?

Learning Village在设计上有趣且能为学生沉浸式学习场景!包含三个学习侧重:



生存语言


即在课堂上经常使用的学术英语。适用于刚接触英语的学习者,涵盖词汇和语言结构。每个模块中都有一个知识点,例如介词用法、语法基本结构的使用等等,学生可以在里面按需求学习常用到课堂语言,为下一节英语课做好充分准备。


自然拼读



通过声音教授阅读。如上图,点击单词下方的耳朵,就会听到该单词的正确读音,点击圆圈,孩子们就必须要读一遍该单词,然后拼写该单词,才能通关学习下一个单词。



课程内容



介绍学校课程最需要的领域所需的词汇。

在上课前,学生们可以在上面学习课堂主题下所需的单词和句子,以便学生自主预习和课后复习。

目前国内的英语教学产品上并没有真正学术英语提升的方式和方法,大部分只是针对考试或者日常用语,这对于英语能力学习非常局限,这也是为什么许多中国的学生无论学习多好,在出国之后都会发现语言上还是有很大的差距。


因此我们引进了在英国和新西兰广泛使用的Learning Village,给学生制定个性化具体学习方案,定期评估和跟踪学习进展情况,确保学生同步跟上同龄英国私校生的英语水平。而这只是小学英语教学中一个小小的部分。

刚进入一年级的小朋友,该如何帮助他们快速适应英文课堂?

在英语写作上,小学老师设置了细化的评估方法,而不是靠“感觉”来评定写作分数。

Kerry Pentney是Y2/G1的一名主班老师,她执教超过30年,她感受到哈罗学生的强自驱力,和对学习浓厚的兴趣。这次Learning Village竞赛就是最好的证明!




她说:“起初我们只是用一点点课堂时间教他们怎么去使用Learning Village 来预习和复习课堂,并鼓励他们回家继续练习,把这种训练当作游戏去“玩”。


小朋友们带着兴奋的心情去做英语游戏挑战,在班级内比拼谁的积分更多,没想到我们在整个竞赛中获得了最高积分!我们的学生总是带给我惊喜和骄傲,总是超出我的期望。”

她在教学中会设置这样的步骤来帮助孩子们提升英语能力:


“群居”激发兴趣


培养自主学习的习惯


强化训练



即鼓励学生在一起阅读英语书籍,这样他们就能根据书的内容去用英语展开讨论。“群居”学习更有利于激发孩子兴趣,孩子们会在组内比较谁知道的更多,在这样氛围的带动下,英语基础较差的孩子也会“不甘示弱”,源源不断地激发他们的学习自驱力。



辅以Learning Village 一样各类有趣的英语学习工具,让孩子们在课前课后都有自主学习的机会。当他们达到课程要求的水平,就开始进入强化阶段。


就这样,孩子们一步步走进Kerry 老师的“圈套”,在短时间内投入极高的热情,从“社交英语”水平阶段过渡到“学术英语”阶段。

In the annual Learning Village competition held this May, Harrow Haikou has won first place with the highest total points! 


Among the list, there are many private secondary and primary schools in the UK. We are very proud of our pre-prep students' enthusiasm for learning and Harrow's high level of English teaching. Their hard work has once again earned honour for Harrow Haikou.


What is Learning Village?

Why do the Harrow students have such a strong passion for learning?

How do we help Pre-Prep students keep up with the full English class?  


What is 

Learning Village 


Many parents may feel that their children's English level is very good with English language being used in daily communication. But why do children fail to keep up with class when they enter an international school? The fact is that the academic English required in the class of an international school is very different from the English used on a daily basis.


Learning Village is a learning platform that provides EAL (English as an Additional Language) course support for non-native English-speaking students aged 6 - 14 so that students can integrate into an English speaking environment as soon as possible. Harrow Haikou introduced the platform of Learning Village at the pre-prep level (G1/Y2 - G4/Y5) to prepare Chinese students for full English learning.




How can Harrow students use Learning Village to improve their academic English in the classroom?

Learning Village is fun in design and it teaches through an immersive learning experience! It has three focuses:


Survival Language


The academic English that is often used in the classroom.

It is suitable for learners who are new to English, covering vocabulary and language structures. There is a knowledge point in each module, such as the use of prepositions, the use of basic grammar structures, etc. Students can learn common English words and expressions according to their needs and be well prepared for their next English class.


Phonics



The students can be taught vocabulary by sound. The children just need to press the “ear” button below, they can hear the correct pronunciation of the word. Then they should press the “circle” button to read out loud the word and spell it before studying the next word.


Course Content



It introduces vocabulary needed in the school curriculum.

Before class, students can learn the required words and sentences under the class topic on the platform, so that students can preview and then review independently after class.






At present, the English teaching products in China do not provide effective ways and methods for improving academic English, and most of them are only for exams or everyday language, which limits improvement of English proficiency. This is why many Chinese students, even with good academic results, find that there is still a big gap in language after going abroad. 


Therefore, we have introduced Learning Village software packages that are widely used in the UK to develop personalized learning plans for students, regularly assess and track learning progress, and ensure that students keep up with the English level of British students of the same age. However, this is only a small part of English teaching at the Pre-Prep stage at Harrow Haikou.



How to help children who have just entered Grade 1 to quickly adapt to an English speaking environment?




Y2/G1 students have been able to write a complete English story after half a year of English learning.

In English writing, Pre-Prep school teachers set detailed assessment methods, rather than relying on "feeling", to evaluate students’ writing levels.

Ms. Kerry Pentney is a homeroom teacher at Y2/G1. She has been teaching for over 30 years, and she can feel the strong self-motivation and interest in learning from Harrow students. This Learning Village competition is the best proof.




She said, “At first, we just spent a little classroom time teaching them how to use the Learning Village , and encouraged them to continue to practice at home, just like playing a game. The children just wanted to complete the challenges with excitement, and they competed in the class to see who has the most points. Unexpectedly, we won the highest points in the entire competition! Our students always bring me surprise, make me proud and exceed my expectations.”


When talking about the methods of improving Chinese students’ English proficiency, she will set the following steps during her teaching:

Inspiring interest in a group


Cultivating the habits of independent study


Strengthening further study



We encourage students to read English books together so that they can start discussions in English based on the content of the book.  Studying in a group is more conducive to stimulating children's interests. Children will compare who knows more within the group. Driven by the competitive atmosphere, children with a less solid English foundation will be reluctant to show weakness, and continuously stimulate their self-motivation in learning.



We will use English learning tools similar to  Learning Village as supplementary methods so that children have the opportunity to learn independently before and after class. When they reach the level required by the course, the intensive phase begins.


In this way, the children can follow the steps set by Ms. Pentney and invest high enthusiasm in a short period of time
