This past week, due to the epidemic in Guangzhou, teaching has once again switched from offline to online. So, how do schools help students to access English, maintain their sense of English and strengthen their language skills for those who have left the 'full English immersion' school environment to study at home? 过去的一周,受广州疫情影响,学校再次将实时课堂搬上“云端”。那么,面对走出了“全英文浸润式教学”的校园环境,在家学习的学生而言,学校又是如何帮助学生接触英文、保持英语语感并加强英文水平的呢?让我们一起看看吧。
Early Years 幼儿园
During their time in the online class, the Early Years' children are not absent from the regular weekly library class, in addition to the full English online class conducted by the Homeroom Teacher. In the online library class, the teacher would greet and care about the children before the class starts, so as to fully motivate them to learn. The class was then conducted in the form of story-telling in English. Through vivid descriptions of scenes in the book and real-time interaction and communication with the children, the teacher created a sense of being in the book and enjoying it, thus enhancing the children's interest in acquiring English and further developing their love of reading.
幼儿园的孩子在网课学习期间,除了由主班教师进行的全英网课教学外,每周例行的图书课也没有缺席。在线上图书课中,老师会在正式开始讲课之前亲切地问候并关心孩子们的情况,充分调动他们的学习积极性。随后,课堂以英语讲故事的形式开展,老师通过生动形象地描述书中的场景,以及与孩子们进行实时的互动和交流,为他们营造身临书中、乐在其中的感觉,从而提高孩子们习得英语的兴趣,也进一步培养他们热爱阅读的好习惯。
Primary School 小学
English Week in October saw a popular 'storytelling' session with members of the school's Senior Leadership Team for primary school students. Now that we are moving into the online period, Mr Paul, the Head of School, still wants the children to have more resources to access English language learning, especially 'listening to English', while they are studying at home. Therefore, from this week onwards, Mr Paul has been carefully selecting suitable books to read each day, recording the audio readings and uploading them to ManageBac, the school's smart campus system, for parents and students to download and access.
十月最后一周的英语周上,由学校高管团队成员为小学学生带来的“讲故事”活动,获得学生的热烈反馈。现在,尽管进入线上教学时期,学校总校长Paul先生仍希望孩子们能够在家学习期间,也能够有更多资源接触英语语言学习,尤其是“听英语”的机会。因此,本周一起,Paul先生每天均精心挑选适合的书籍内容,录制诵读音频,并将书籍内容与音频一同上传至学校的智慧校园教学系统ManageBac上,供家长与学生下载并查阅。

The extra hours of English language acquisition are designed to ensure that students who need support and resources receive them. Students' English development is a priority at the school.
所有语言习得额外课时的安排,均有助于学校策略性地将资源与协助分配到需要协助的学生,以达成学校语言建构的目标。即使在目前线上教学期间,学校英语教学团队也在密切关注每一位学生在英语语言学习方面的需求,提供有效的学习资源以帮助他们在家期间,也能最大限度地接触英语。
In addition to the learning resources provided for students, the school is also working to help parents to participate in the process of helping their children to improve their English language skills. Since September, the school has been running Parent College on English Language Acquisition and English Acquisition Forum to help parents gain an in-depth understanding of the school's English Language Acquisition and Enhancement programme and to discuss how to help students improve their English skills through home-school collaboration.
在英语学习方面,除了为学生提供的学习资源以外,学校也在努力帮助家长共同参与到帮助孩子提高英语能力的过程中。九月起至今,学校已开办了关于“英语语言习得”的家长课堂,以及关于“英文提升”的专题研讨会,帮助家长深入了解学校英语语言习得及提升课程,并通过家校联动,共同探讨如何帮助学生更好地提升英语能力。
The school also has a well-established communication system (including but not limited to email, WeChat and ManageBac) to facilitate communication and cooperation between parents and the school's teachers and leadership team, and help parents gain a more comprehensive understanding of the school's teaching. At the same time, our comprehensive home-school communication system has greatly facilitated communication between parents and the school's teachers and leadership team, helping parents to better consult their children on learning-related issues. At this moment, we hope that the epidemic will soon be over and that the school will be revitalised and energised.
同时,完备的家校沟通体制(包括但不限于邮件、微信与ManageBac等信息交互渠道与智慧校园教学系统),也极大地促进了家长与学校教师和领导团队之间的交流,帮助家长更好地咨询与孩子学习相关的问题。此刻,我们万分希望疫情能尽快平息,校园重新充满活力与朝气。孩子们,我们在校园等你们回来!
