ZAP!!! If you have ever seen a bolt of lightning as it leaps to the ground you might have wondered what caused the lightning strike. In a nutshell, it is just a vivid demonstration of the power of ‘Static Electricity (electrical energy that has gathered at one place)’. Static, as you might know, is the build of charge on objects until they find a way to somehow get discharged. Students find it fascinating to learn about static electricity, how objects get charged and what it means for objects to be in an electrostatic equilibrium.


咝!!!如果你曾看过一道闪电猛地击入地面,你可能会疑问,是什么导致闪电划过天空。简而言之,这其实只是一个静电力量的生动表现(集中在同一地方的电能)。正如你可能知道的,静电是物体上电荷的累积,直到它们找到某种方式被释放出去。而对学生而言,学习静电现象,了解“物体是如何被导入电荷的”以及“物体处于静电平衡状态意味着什么”这些问题是十分迷人和有趣的。

Although lightning is a spectacular example of static electricity, it's not something we can harness. However, it is something that can be simulated in a classroom in front of students using a set of tools that were invented decades ago. For instance, a tesla coil, an invention which truly transformed the world in the time of it’s of inception, allows wireless transfer of electricity. 


闪电是描述静电现象一个壮观且引人注目的例子,但它并不是一个我们可以轻易驾驭和利用的东西。然而,这是一种可以在教室里模拟出来的东西,借用一套几十年前发明出来的工具就可以办到。比如说,特斯拉式感应圈,一个真正改变世界的发明,在其初始研究阶段,它便造就了电能的无线传播。

Another way of simulating lightning would be through a device known as the ‘Van de Graaff generator’. This device is a classroom classic which is used to accelerate particles through millions of volts or if that sounds confusing, it makes your hair stand when you touch it. 


另外,我们也可以通过一个叫做“范德格拉夫发电机”的器械来模拟闪电。这个经典的教学用具通过十万及百万的电伏来加速粒子的运动,更加形象地说,当你触碰它时,它会让你的头发立起来。

The rubber belt inside the Van de Graaff generator runs between two rollers made of different materials, causing electrons to transfer to the metallic dome. This device can generate up to a million volts when fully functional.


“范德格拉夫发电机”内部的橡胶带,在由两种不同材料制成的滚轴间运行,促使电子转移至金属圆顶上。这个装置在完全工作时可以产生高达一百万伏的电压。

To experience the awe-inspiring greatness of this device, you have to make sure that you insulate yourself from the ground. Standing on top of a plastic stool or box would do the job as plastic is a good insulator.


为了体验这个器械令人惊叹的力量,你一定要保证你与地面是绝缘的。站在一个塑胶凳子或盒子上是一个好主意,因为塑料是一个很好的绝缘体。

The students were amazed when they saw their peers getting charged by the generator. Most of them stated that they have learned about static electricity in middle school before but never experienced what it’s like to interact with charged objects. As a teacher, that was the most fun I had in class since this semester started.


当同学们看到他们的同龄人被发电机导电时,大家都震惊了。许多同学说,虽然他们在初中时就学过关于静电的知识,但从没体验过与导电物体相互作用的感觉。作为一名老师,让学生们尝试这些新东西,是我自从这学期开始到现在,所收获的最大乐趣。

It’s classes like these that make SANNEW school an ideal place for students to learn. Classes at SANNNEW are interesting, they engage students and also narrow the difference between text book learning and real life application. The goal here is to make sure that before a student exits the classroom, they have absorbed useful information and can find ways to benefit themselves and in the future, all mankind.


正是这样的课程,才让武汉三牛中美中学成为学生学习的理想之地。三牛的课堂很生动,不仅调动了同学们的兴趣,更结合了书本上的理论知识与实际生活的应用。作为一个物理老师,我的目标是保证所有学生在离开教室前,就已经吸收了这些有用的知识,并且,他们也能够利用这些知识,造福自己和全人类!
