As the academic year progresses, it's time for an important event at ISNS that puts students firmly in the driver's seat: Student-Led Conferences (SLCs). Scheduled for this Friday 19 April, students will take the lead in showcasing their learning journey to their families.
What is a Student-Led Conference?
Unlike traditional Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs), where adults discuss a child's progress without the student present, SLCs are a collaborative effort involving students, parents, and teachers.
During an PYP SLC, the student guides their parents through a series of activities, reflecting on their achievements, growth, and setting goals for the future.
It is a unique opportunity for family to step inside the classroom and witness the ongoing journey of learning. Families engage in dialogue with students about their showcased work, celebrating the evident development of skills throughout SLCs.
Middle School Student-Led Conferences (SLCs) at ISNS provide a platform for students to showcase their learning journey throughout the year. Students take the lead in selecting and presenting summative or formative assessments from each class to discuss with their parents.
These assessments may be chosen based on various reasons, such as a deep understanding of a topic, genuine interest, pride in the quality of work, or as a reflection of improvement after initial challenges.
High School-PTCs instead of SLCs
High School Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs) foster collaboration between teachers and families to support student well-being and academic success. In 10-minute sessions, parents discuss learning, achievement, behavior, and welfare, with students encouraged to attend.
These conferences serve as essential checkpoints in nurturing positive relationships and ensuring a shared commitment to student progress and development.
Outcomes We Aim to Achieve
The ultimate goal of SLCs at ISNS is to provide meaningful opportunities for students and families to engage in dialogue, celebrate achievements, and reflect on the learning journey together. Our desired outcomes include:
Providing students with the agency to discuss their work with their families.
Promoting reflection on student work through dialogue.
Celebrating students' learning journey over the year.
Enhancing parents’ overall understanding of their child's educational experience.
Developing a more profound insight into the school's curriculum and the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
It's encouraged for families to center their focus on their children and fully immerse themselves in the moment.
