Our middle and high school curriculum is a skills-focused programme that is used widely in the UK and in many British and other international schools to prepare students for the demands of university.
Based on Key Stage Three of the British educational system, the secondary curriculum at The British School of Guangzhou is designed to provide our middle and high school students with a broad and balanced programme of study in the following subjects:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
- Languages (Chinese, Spanish, French, German or English as an Additional Language)
- Physical Education
- Computer Science

These essential courses will develop pupils' critical thinking and analytical skills and their ability to communicate ideas effectively. Students can develop certain key skills that will allow them to be successful across all subject areas, and will assist with future challenges at university and in the workplace.
Preparing for the IGCSEs
At 14 years old (Year 10), students at our Guangzhou high school start their two-year examination course, which revolves around preparing for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSEs). These widely recognised entrance qualifications are valuable assets for students seeking admission to their preferred university, and are excellent preparation for the challenges of university life.
Students study the core IGCSEs in Maths, Science, English and a language. This course of study is complemented with a number of optional IGCSEs. Students are likely to sit between 9-11 IGCSEs in total. This includes the subjects mentioned above as well as Business Studies and Global Perspectives.
