For me, my studies at Farragut were like an unknown journey. In the process of exploring the scenery along the way, I gained tenacity and self-confidence. Looking back on this journey, although each stage had its difficulties and challenges, it gave me more courage to explore the world.

Over the years, my friends and I in the ensemble completed dozens of small and large performances. From the fledgling "Music Club" to the current Savory Music Ensemble and String Orchestra, every time I stood in the spotlight, I felt the power that music gave me.

When I first joined Farragut, the newly established music club attracted me at the club recruitment fair. Because I played the cello and piano, music teacher Grace Zhang strongly recommended that I join. So, with naivety and anticipation, I came to this home that accompanied me through high school.

The ensemble gathered students from all over the school who loved music. We learned from each other, worked together to solve performance problems, and gradually became close friends. I made my best friends here, and teacher Grace Zhang  became our "wise elder sister." The Tuesday afternoon rehearsals became my most anticipated events.

I still vividly remember the nervousness of that first performance in front of the entire school faculty and students. I was worried that I would play wrong notes or go out of tune, that I wouldn't look graceful playing the cello, and that the coordination between the musicians wouldn't be perfect. But I can also recall the applause from the audience after we took our bows, the encouraging messages from teachers and students after the show, and the toast at the celebration banquet.

From the Halloween show to the Christmas and New Year concert to street flash mobs, I gradually began to enjoy every moment of performing. Thanks to Farragut's open and inclusive arts environment, I became more confident and braver.

Later, as the senior members graduated, I took over managing the ensemble. I formed a flash mob band and started leading rehearsals for the orchestra and ensemble. I understood the responsibilities that a manager bears and did my best to perfect every performance.

In my college application essay, I wrote,

“The spotlight shines on us and we are the young birds of the red-billed blue magpie that have successfully completed the test of cliff learning.”

The major I was admitted to at NYU is Media, Culture, and Communication, or what people commonly call "media studies." In the future, I plan to try to become an advertising director.

My exploration of media began with a final project for an ESOL class. The group assignment was to make a video about "public art," so I chose to direct a documentary about So-won, a victim of child sexual abuse in South Korea. During filming, I realized that I really enjoyed the process of creating a script and realizing it through images, so I started learning about the media field.

Early on, when deciding on my career goal, the school's college counselors gave me a lot of help, such as recommending that I participate in the Harvard Summit, Yuanpei Young Scholars research, Pioneer Research, etc.

As I took on more filming tasks through these activities, I became more determined to study media.

I moved filming equipment in the early morning hours; I filmed a few seconds of footage in scorching heat and freezing cold; I worked overnight revising scripts and editing videos, polishing every detail.

From screenwriting to post-production to creating background music, I kept trying to push my boundaries and experience different production roles, tirelessly enjoying the process.

In the HOSA competition, as the director, my classmates and I completed a 30-second public service advertisement and won national first place.

At that moment, standing on the awards stage,

I realized this would be my life's passion.

As a "journalist"

In 10th grade, I founded the AFA school journal and served as editor-in-chief. In the four officially published issues, we completed over 20 interviews and filming sessions, documenting the stories of Farragut's teachers and students.

From conceiving the idea to launch the journal to bringing it to life, the school's teachers gave me a lot of help. At the beginning of founding it, I completed the editing of the premier issue all on my own. Because I had so little understanding of school publications, I encountered many problems with the cover design and layout which took two months of revisions before it could be published. Later, with Mrs. Ding's assistance, I formed an editorial team for the journal and more and more students joined in, contributing their skills with words and images.

I was also admitted to Northwestern University's Medill News Summer Program, with the opportunity to study journalism alongside school journal editors from around the world at the #1 journalism school in America.

Through the three years of training with the school journal, from being a total "interview newbie" to skillfully getting interviewees to open up, I gradually figured out how to be a qualified "journalist." As the interviewer, I could step into their lives and explore their experiences. As the chronicler, I needed to digest their stories and then present them to readers through words. Over these three years, by viewing the world through others' stories, I slowly broadened my perspective.

Last summer, my mom and I visited schools across the east and west coasts of the US—Chicago, New York, Boston, and Los Angeles. The moment the plane landed in New York, I instantly fell in love with this bustling city. The ambitions and opportunities here were exactly the kind of environment I had been craving.

However, after the application season began, for various reasons, I had to give up my years of preparation for US universities and instead applied to the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. After receiving the offer, I didn't feel the relief I had imagined.

Although UvA’s media program is globally ranked #1, facing a country and city I had only learned about a month prior, I felt I didn't belong there. The anxiety over my current situation and confusion about the future made me start thinking about how to break the deadlock.

By chance, I saw NYU's newly announced free tuition policy. Although most people believed this was just NYU's publicity stunt and that Chinese students' applications would be futile, with 5 days left before the ED1 deadline, I still decided to give it a shot.

With the support of the college counselors and after dozens of hours of extreme preparation, I successfully submitted my application. On the morning of December 15th, I received NYU's full scholarship offer, covering over $56,600 in tuition and realizing my New York dream.

My journey at Farragut has thus come to a chapter's end. I can still hear the encouragement from my family, teachers, and friends during my times of anxiety.

I know deeply that the courage to "give it a shot" came from the accumulation of the past few years, from the trust of those around me, and also from the grounded, step-by-step exploration of my true self.

Finally, best wishes to the incoming class of students for a successful application process. Don't be overly anxious. To borrow a phrase I said most often during application season: Let things take their natural course, everything happens for a reason.
