数学学习中好成绩≠实践应用能力?

学校如何帮助学生在数学考试中取得好成绩,同时提高他们的实践能力呢?

在过去的四年里,我们的学生在数学考试中取得了优异的成绩,例如,在这几年的IGCSE考试中,我们的满分率一直保持在90%。然而,我们的重点不仅仅是磨练学生的做卷技巧,我们还非常注重培养学生的实践能力,如解决问题和批判性思维能力。我们将在以下几个方面练习和培养学生的能力。


概念理解:

我们希望帮助学生理解数学概念的相关性,并发展实际解决问题的能力。使学生掌握基本概念,这对于在数学中解决问题和进行批判性思考至关重要。

How can schools help students achieve good grades in math exams while also enhancing their practical abilities?

Over the past four years, our students have achieved excellent results in Math Exams, for example, we had a consistent full mark rate of 90% in IGCSE Exams these years. However, our focus has not been solely on honing students' paper working skills. We have also placed great emphasis on developing their practical abilities such as problem-solving and critical thinking skills. We will practice and develop their skills in the following areas.



CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING

We want to can help students understand the relevance of math concepts and develop practical problem-solving skills. We enable students to grasp the underlying concepts, which is essential for problem-solving and critical thinking in mathematics. Hence the problems that are in practical contexts are the preferred examples in our Math lessons. This could helps students understand the relevance of math in everyday life instead of rotting memorization of formulas and procedures in traditional learning style.

SUPPORTIVE

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, seeking help, and collaborating with peers can contribute to their overall academic success. Encouraging a growth mindset and emphasizing the value of learning from mistakes can also foster practical problem-solving skills. Therefore, in our math lessons, we encourage students to make mistakes and teach them how to learn from the mistakes. We also encourage students to help each other to figure out the problems by themselves instead of just listening to the teacher’s explanation.

DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS

We also emphasizes the development of communication skills, requiring students to articulate their mathematical thinking and justify their solutions. This helps students become effective communicators and prepares them to express complex mathematical ideas clearly and coherently. During our Math lesson, every student is encouraged to present their ideas of the questions or concepts in front of the teacher and the classmates. By this approach, their understanding of the problem, their initiative of learning, their logical thinking skills as well as their communication skill could get improved gradually.

PERSPECTIVE



As we are a bilingual IB school, our framework incorporates international-mindedness, exposing students to diverse cultural and global perspectives. This helps students understand the universal nature of mathematics and its applications in different cultural contexts, preparing them for an increasingly interconnected world. In order to do this, the teacher needs to have a deep understanding of the language of instruction and the ability to effectively communicate mathematical concepts in both languages. The teacher needs to providing opportunities for students to learn and practice mathematical terminology in both languages, as well as to understand the nuances of mathematical language in different cultural contexts.

 

By implementing these strategies, schools can support students in achieving success in math exams while also developing their practical abilities, ensuring that students are well-prepared for both academic assessments and real-world applications of mathematical concepts.
