计算机课堂上,宾大(美国宾夕法尼亚大学)毕业的Katherine老师为了让同学们透彻理解“计算机硬件组成结构”,现场将一台计算机后壳拆掉,直观展示内存条、CPU等核心部件。与此同时,老师生动讲解了各零部件如何协同工作,巧妙地将复杂的计算机构造与STEAM教育中常用的人工智能套件进行了对比分析。


“尽管两者都建立在精密的电路元件组合之上,但电脑作为通用的计算平台,其硬件架构更为庞大灵活,能够应对多样化的任务挑战;而人工智能套件所构建的嵌入式系统,则专注于特定功能,体积小巧且效率出众,广泛应用于智能家居、医疗设备等领域。”

"Wow, so that's how it works!"


In a computer science class, Katherine, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), decided to dismantle a computer on the spot to help her students fully understand the structure of computer hardware. She removed the machine's back cover, giving students a direct view of the core components like the RAM and CPU. At the same time, she vividly explained how each part works together, cleverly comparing the complex computer architecture with AI kits commonly used in STEAM education.


"Although both are built on precise combinations of circuit components, a computer, as a general-purpose computing platform, has a much larger and more flexible hardware architecture that can handle various tasks. On the other hand, the embedded systems built into AI kits focus on specific functions, are compact, and excel in efficiency, making them widely used in smart homes, medical devices, and more."

Katherine的计算机情缘,始于父辈的先锋之路。她的父亲作为中国首批程序员,曾参与航空工业的代码编写。自幼耳濡目染,Katherine对计算机产生了浓厚的兴趣。毕业于美国宾夕法尼亚大学,获得嵌入式专业硕士学位后,她一直在计算机领域深耕细作。从在美洲区负责科技核心技术,到创办自己的科技公司,她在计算机行业沉淀了近十五年的宝贵经验。


多年多国的工作经历,让她深刻感受到中西方在工作和学习思维上的差异:西方更注重创新思维和批判性思维的培养,而中方则强调扎实的基础和执行力。


“在数字时代,我坚信技术是推动社会进步的关键力量。”她渴望将自己的知识与经验传授给下一代,为国家培养更多科创人才。

Katherine's passion for computing was inspired by her father, one of China's first programmers, who contributed to the aviation industry by writing code. Growing up in such an environment, Katherine developed a deep interest in computers. After graduating with a master's degree in Embedded Systems from the University of Pennsylvania, she continued to immerse herself in computing. From overseeing core technology in the Americas to founding her own tech company, Katherine has accumulated nearly fifteen years of valuable experience in the tech industry. Her extensive work experience across multiple countries has given her a deep understanding of the differences in work and study approaches between the East and the West: Western education emphasises cultivating innovative and critical thinking, while the East focuses on solid foundational knowledge and execution. Katherine says, "In the digital age, I firmly believe that technology is the key force driving societal progress.” Katherine is eager to pass on her knowledge and experience to the next generation, helping to cultivate more innovative talents for the nation.

After transitioning into the education sector, Katherine quickly became an expert in various international curricula and STEAM courses within three years. Her students have attended world-renowned universities such as Johns Hopkins University, University College London, and the University of Rochester. "I teach more than just code; I teach problem-solving methods and innovative thinking." In her interactions with students, she consistently upholds the principle of balancing knowledge foundation with independent innovation, focusing on developing students' foundational knowledge and encouraging them to challenge the status quo and think creatively.


In the "Snake Evolution Journey" project, Katherine transformed students from mere learners into creators. They worked in groups to develop personalised versions of the classic Snake game using their knowledge of programming languages and object-oriented design thinking. From the snake's flexible movements to the generation of colourful food and the setting of random obstacles, every step tested the students' technical skills and creative imagination. This project-based learning approach reinforced students' programming knowledge, stimulated their innovative thinking, and enhanced their problem-solving abilities.

As the demand for innovative thinking and interdisciplinary integration grows, the significance of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education becomes increasingly prominent. "The STEAM Innovation Centre will be developed into a digital immersive learning space seamlessly integrating art and technology. Here, the charm of creation is fully displayed, and the interaction between art and technology is also deeply emphasised." Katherine has designed a series of interdisciplinary courses that blend 3D design, AI programming, and other tech-related subjects with mathematics and art to cultivate students' comprehensive skills. 


The school has introduced advanced technological equipment and teaching resources, such as 3D printers, robotics labs, and laser cutters. It has also established an innovation lab where students can create their maker projects. Building on this, Katherine plans to establish a coding club, leading students to participate in algorithm competitions, tech innovation contests, and robotics competitions, helping them grow through hands-on practice and igniting their passion for future technologies.
