Modelled on the best practice of British Preparatory Schools and International Middle Schools, the Prep Phase is a blend of specialist-based subject teaching within the security of the Upper School. Students in the Prep Phase are in one of six Houses, each led by a Prep Leader who has responsibility for students across all years in the Prep Phase. Within the Prep Houses are smaller vertical tutor groups which consist of a mix of students from Years 6 through to Year 8. In this way, each Tutor can deliver close personal tutoring, whilst the students can offer support and develop friendships across all 3 year groups. In Year 8 students have the opportunity to become House Captains, a position in which they can lead other pupils to get involved in House events and work with their Prep Leader to build and encourage a strong House identity.

At the core of the Prep Phase are the subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Mandarin, each differentiated and delivered by specific subject teachers. Setting in these subjects caters to pupils' strengths and allows students to be supported where necessary and extended when needed. The pupils in the Prep Phase are also exposed to a wide and varied curriculum delivered by specialist teachers, including: Art, Drama, History, Geography, Computing, Design and Technology, Music, as well as PE and Sports. In order to further develop a holistic education, our students in the Prep phase will also take part in a Positive Education programme. The development of a child's well-being and happiness is essential for an active and optimistic future.

Close personal tutoring is at the heart of the Harrow Beijing philosophy. Each pupil has a Form Tutor who is responsible for their day to day welfare, both academically and personally. In this way, the Prep Phase maintains a ‘small school’ atmosphere, within a large school structure, allowing pupils the benefits of an Upper School approach within the care of the Prep Phase.
