# Design ISNS

At ISNS, every student in sixth to eighth grade is introduced to design classes, paving the way for a deeper exploration in ninth grade. The curriculum during these crucial years sets the stage for tackling more complex design tasks. From product design to structure design, graphic design, and illustration, students engage with a diverse range of design topics.

This week, we ventured into the vibrant world of Middle School Design with Mr. Francois Pretorius to witness firsthand the cultivation of essential skills shaping our students' creative journeys.

Framework sets for the future

Beginning with grade six, we look into the principles of design, specifically in relation to poster design. The students engage in a hands-on printmaking project under my guidance.

Moving on to grade seven, the curriculum centers around character design. Here, the emphasis is on fostering creative thinking skills while exploring visual narratives. Students also receive an introduction to Adobe Illustrator, a skill they further refine in grade eight during a brand design unit.

In grade eight, students delve deeper into the workings of brands, brand identity, and logo design. They undertake a practical project where they choose an established international company to rebrand. This involves a logo redesign, applied across various products, with students creating digital mockups as part of the process.

Grade 7 Character Design Unit

In the grade seven character design unit, students embark on the research phase, exploring the essence of characters, their creators, and their diverse applications. Unlike other designers, character designers have a distinct role spanning fields like marketing, children's books, comics, and animation, offering unique insights into their craft.

Next, students proceed to develop their own characters, beginning with sketchbooks to draw and refine their designs. Various exercises focus on drawing faces and bodies, including sideways movement. Through annotations, they track changes and document the ideation process.

Final sketches transition to Adobe Illustrator, initially guided by in-person interface training followed by hands-on video tutorials. These tutorials include completing short projects before digitally redesigning their characters. Additionally, advancements in AI prompt exploration of animation possibilities.

The Process of Character Design

Concept Development:

Bring forth the character concept, emphasizing visual features and background story.

Consider the context of use, such as in children's books or advertising, with attention to target audience.

Character Design Process:

● Design Brief: Conduct research to initiate the project.

● Process Work: Develop ideas through sketching and iterations towards a final sketch.

● Digital Work: Produce the final digital design.

● Reflection: Evaluate project success, gather peer feedback, and develop design specifications.

Presentation:

● Create presentation documents (e.g., slideshows).

● Deliver presentations in person or via video recording.

● Receive feedback from peers and instructors on presentations and overall projects.

Thoughts on the evolution of graphic design with AI

“I maintain a positive outlook on this. Over the past two decades, the field has transformed significantly, branching into subfields like user experience and interface design, alongside advancements in artificial intelligence.

Our approach blends industry standards like Adobe Illustrator with emerging tools, reflecting the evolving landscape. We introduce automation in design processes, exemplified by Canva, a platform aligning with design principles taught in our curriculum. While the broader public may not grasp its significance, our students appreciate its relevance as they learn and implement design concepts. ”
