The Lion Dance

a Touch of Brilliance

Our Foundation Day celebrations opened in style with a lion dance, featuring a whopping four acrobatic lions dancing to the beat of the drums. Eliciting gasps and cheers, they displayed remarkable coordination and cooperation, moving and turning with impressive agility, and infecting the crowd with their energy.

As the first overseas campus of the ancient King's School Canterbury, KSS shares its history and heritage with its sister school in the UK. With this in mind, Dr Robert Willis, Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Governors of KSC, and Ms. Nina Hunt, International Director of KSC, travelled thousands of miles to Shenzhen to celebrate this significant occasion with us.

The King's School Shenzhen 5th Foundation Day

During the lion dance, Mr. Justin Kung, Chairman of the Board of Governors of King's Shenzhen, and Dr Willis performed the lion eye-dotting ritual. This special moment encapsulated the cross-cultural and mutually-respectful nature of our two schools' connection.

Pre-Prep Performances

Little Learners Make a

Big Splash

Our Pre-Prep Foundation Day Event was hosted by Mr. Balcombe, our Co-Head of Pre-Prep, and Ms. He, one of our bilingual class teachers. They took those in attendance on a trip down memory lane, talking about the past five years at Pre-Prep. Their introduction was followed by our PreK and K1 students, who took to the stage to meet and exceed their parents expectations with an inspired song and dance performance.

Whether on stage or in their pre-recorded videos, the children all wore radiant smiles. The King's School's belief in the educational philosophy that "Happy children are the best learners" could not be proved any clearer than this. We focus on creating a supportive and engaging learning environment, allowing each child to grow confidently.

Another core principle at KSS is our belief in the power of imagination. Not only do we imagine the achievements that these children will one day have to their name, we also encourage them to realise their unlimited potential. In the words of K2, that means that we encourage them to “Try Everything”.

On stage, K3's energetic performance brought tremendous joy to the parents present. The photos and videos displayed on the screen captured some of the many joyful moments experienced at King's Pre-Prep, showcasing the boundless energy and infinite creativity of our young learners.

The Stage Came to Life at

King's Prep

Student-led Performances

Impressed

With the stage as their medium and talent as their language, King's Prep students put on a series of impressive performances. All of our students took part in the Foundation Day Performance, some in whole-grade choruses, others in small groups, and others still in musical solos. From traditional Chinese instruments like the guzheng, to Latin and modern dance, all conveyed their love and enthusiasm for music and performing arts in their own way.

The Grade 1 students began by singing "Canton Air No. 5," with lyrics carefully crafted by Mr. Wharton, one of our Grade 1 teachers. When one of our Grade 2 students performed a ukulele solo, the entire audience spontaneously started to clap along, reflecting the supportive atmosphere of the King's community: harmonious and loving, always trying to help each other.

The King's band, composed of students participating in the music CCA, music IGCSE, and music A Level, brought even more energy to the stage with a lively "Libertango" and later ignited the entire venue with their rendition of the pop-rock song "Bring Me to Life."

Some of our Grade 8 and Grade 9 students followed with a dramatic excerpt from the play "My Fair Lady". They gave the performance their all, displaying excellent acting skills and bringing each character to life, thereby drawing the audience into the story. The students mastered the tone and rhythm of the language, and the all-English performance was truly impressive.

It is worth mentioning that, from the host to the actors, singers, dancers, band, and the stage crew, the entire performance was led by the students. This was not only a showcase of their talent but also a sign of the students' confidence and leadership.

In the reception hall, there was a specially designed stage where students recited poetry in both Chinese and English. With fluent and beautiful tones, they interpreted masterpieces from different language and cultural backgrounds. The poetry recital added a touch of artistic refinement to our Foundation Day celebrations, and we are confident that this will be an unforgettable memory for all involved. The past five years have not been without challenges for KSS, but as each challenge has been overcome, it has turned into a milestone on our journey to greatness. We now look forward to many more years of progress, and to shaping the legacy of this centuries-old institution. May the students of King's spread their wings and fly!
