Secondary News Issue 31

Grade 6 Science class worked hands-on to produce models for earthquake experiments. Students designed and created structures to measure the effect of different forces, as part of their current unit on Earth Sciences.

As a follow up of their unit in mini golf course design, the Grade 6 PHE class refined their design and created a more effective and sophisticated course for the teachers to trial.

作为六年级体育健康课建造迷你高尔夫球场课程单元的后续，同学们改进了自己的设计，创造了一门可供老师试用的更有效且精密的课程。

Four Grade 9 students took the opportunity to visit SGA Shenzhen in Longgang last Thursday to see their Personal Project Exhibition. To prepare for their own upcoming Personal Project next year, the students asked questions about the process of the PP, the challenges and successes encountered by the students, and also the self-management aspect in creating and finishing the project successfully. 

四名九年级同学上周四来到深圳外国语湾区学校龙岗校区参观了他们的个人项目展。为了自己即将在明年开展的个人项目做准备，同学们详细了解有关个人项目的过程、挑战以及如何成功地用自我管理创建并完成项目等问题。 

DP1 students continue to build their text analysis skills, with a focus on identifying relevant global issues and learning and applying visual analysis techniques for oral presentations. The current unit explores the photos of Dorothy Lange and her documentation of life in America in the 1930s.  

DP1的同学们继续锻炼文本分析能力，本次他们聚焦识别讨论全球相关问题，并学习应用视觉分析技术进行口头陈述。目前的单元学习中他们探索 Dorothy Lange 的照片和她在20世纪30年代在美国的生活记录。 

Matthew began his research project, “Investigation of the association between the oral health condition (especial periodontitis) and upper digestive cancers in Shanxi”, in June 2023. Out of more than 2,500 high school students from over 50 schools nationwide, Matthew was selected to give an oral presentation at the “2023-2024 12th CTB Global Youth Research and Innovation Conference”. This event, co-hosted by Harvard Business School and Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management, has been held annually since 2021. His paper was honored as one of the outstanding submissions and has been included in the CTB Digital Library, a repository that is highly recognized by universities worldwide, as noted on the website of CTB Global Youth Research and Innovation Conference. Congratulations to Matthew on his first original academic paper in high school, presented at the CTB conference. 

2023年6月马修开始了他的研究项目《山西省口腔健康状况（尤其是牙周炎）与上消化道癌症的关系调查》。Matthew从全国50多所学校的2500多名高中生中脱颖而出，被选为在“2023-2024第12届CTB全球青年研究创新论坛”上演讲。活动由哈佛商学院和清华大学经济管理学院联合主办，自2021年以来每年举办一次。他在此享有盛誉的学术创新会议上进行了出色的演讲，他的论文在两千多份参赛作品中被评选为优秀论文之一。他的研究论文已被列入CTB数字图书馆，这是一个受世界各地大学高度认可的存储库，CTB会议官网有示。我们祝贺马修在CTB会议上发表了他高中时期的第一篇原创学术论文！  

The SIS EAL Program uses multiple data points while engaging in collaborative discourse to identify language support plans for our Multilingual Learners (MLLs). Our intention is to support each student in just the right way along their language learning journey. To make these decisions, stakeholders across the Primary and Secondary campuses put their heads together to ensure support levels are personalized to meet the needs of each student in our EAL Program. Through these evidence-based discussions, SIS is paving a way for each multilingual learner to receive language learning instruction within their zone of proximal development so students can reach their fullest potential.

Next Wednesday April 17th will be our Grade 7 & 8 Career Day.  Students will get the chance to hear three presentations from parents and members of the SIS community about their careers.  We have a variety of presenters, from lawyers and architects, to a CEO of a company, an environmental consultant, a musician, a physiotherapist, a chiropractor, and people who work in finance and the gaming industry.  We encourage students to connect their middle school IB learning around ATL skills such as communication, social, self-management, and research to these career journeys.  We hope you might want to have conversations at home about questions students may have.  Please let us know if you want to be involved in our next Career Day next Fall! University of Waterloo is hosting their annual Gauss math contests for students in G7 & G8, and any interested students in G6. Students will be given 60 minutes to complete 25 multiple choice questions. Rather than testing content, most of the contest problems test logical thinking and mathematical problem-solving skills. These contests provide great opportunities to inspire students who already have a strong interest in mathematics, and also help to increase confidence and ability in mathematics for other students. Interested students can sign up by scanning the QR code. You must be logged into your SIS student account to register. Last day to register is Monday April 22 11pm.

As the end of the school year nears, we will be having all kinds of celebrations to mark achievements. Graduation, and celebrating our seniors is a huge point of pride for us. Parents, students and the school have worked together to make this important milestone a reality, and we will celebrate it in typical Gecko style. Here are some important dates to remember for our Senior Celebrations:   

Last day of Class (seniors only) – April 19  
Next Friday, April 19, is the last day for regular attendance for Seniors. Seniors will have a 2-day study break before beginning Diploma Programme exams on Wednesday, April 24. We are excited for this milestone and wish our Seniors well as they prepare for their assessments.  

DP Exams – April 24 - May 17  
Enough said. Good luck!!!   

Prom – May 18   
Glitz. Glamour. Great food and friends. Some dancing and a lot of memories created. We’ll be at the Shangri-La Futian this year.    

Senior Trip – May 20 - 22  
After all that stress and tension from exams, a little unwinding and together time surrounded by the beauty of Sanya.    

3 Campus Clap-out Ceremony – May 23   
We are expanding the Clap Out this year and will be doing a 3 campus clap out. We want all our littles to see our pride and joy and think about what it might be like for them, when they grow up.

Graduation Ceremony & Banquet – May 24  
Such a special day! Graduation Ceremony at SIS Bay Theatre 5pm and the Banquet at Andaz Shenzhen Bay Hotel 7:30pm.     

Graduation Brunch – May 25     
After an action-packed week, brunch is a great way to celebrate their last meal together as a cohort, and at the Hilton too.

Assessing Wellness in Education survey are currently being conducted during the mentor time. We look forward to the data and being able to use it in supporting our Net Valley Geckos.

Formative assessments are used to “form” instruction. We use the data collected from formative assessments in designing learning experiences to meet students where they are in order to assist them to grow in their knowledge and understanding. Teachers conduct formative assessments on a daily basis. This can be walking around and looking at each student’s work or taking a poll, for example. WIDA and MAP are examples of formative assessment. They give teachers data to use so that we help students maximize their learning while at school. MAP assessments begin at Net Valley on Tuesday, April 23.
